A wagon that's part minivan and part SUV, the Chrysler Pacifica luxury crossover attempts to be all things to all people. In many respects, it succeeds. The Pacifica's sculpted lines give it a look that's more stylish than that of your typical ho-hum kiddie hauler, but with room for six, it handles this function without breaking a sweat. Best of all, the Pacifica gets you there with a nimbleness that belies its capacious heft.
Updates have been made this year that enhance the vehicle's family-friendly quotient. Stability control, side curtain airbags and a tire-pressure monitoring system are now standard on all trims. Also, a backup camera and backup sensor have been added to the options list on certain models.
The Pacifica comes in base, Touring and Limited
trim levels, as well as various seasonal editions staggered in between.
All-wheel drive is optional across the line.
Chrysler unveiled the Pacifica in early 2003, billing the design its "Handsome Protector" theme. Not surprisingly, the car was heavily marketed toward women. Their new engine also powers the Dodge Nitro SUV, as well as the redesigned Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Caravan minivans. In the Pacifica, it makes 253 horsepower and 262 pounds-feet of torque. Front-wheel-drive base models soldier on with a 200-hp, 3.8-liter V-6 and four-speed automatic.
With either V-6, the Pacifica has adequate low-speed power. The larger engine emits a satisfying growl and delivers palpably quicker acceleration. Neither engine delivers stellar gas mileage. Chrysler recommends midgrade gasoline for optimum performance with the 4.0-liter V-6, though regular will do.
The 2007 Chrysler Pacifica handles with a confidence that surpasses that of most minivans and SUVs. Steering feedback is solid, though some drivers might find body motions to be excessive when it's driven over bumps. All in all, however, the Pacifica delivers more driving enjoyment than you'd expect from a family hauler. In terms of acceleration, the wagon's robust curb weight dulls acceleration for models with the smaller V6.
In stark contrast to the poor fittings and cheap controls, the electroluminescent gauges and door-mounted seat controls feel genuinely upscale. In standard configuration, the Pacifica seats five, with a three-passenger bench as a second row. Most trim levels swap the bench for two bucket seats and add a two-seat third row, bringing seating capacity to six.
Thanks to their modest side bolsters, the front seats are reasonably supportive. My test car had leather seats and suede inserts, which were about minivan-quality ? durable but not very luxurious. The front seats come with standard power adjusters, but they don't have a great deal of range for tall drivers. Optional power-adjustable pedals help shorter drivers position themselves a proper distance from the steering wheel and its airbag.
In six-seat Pacificas, the second-row bucket seats are manually adjustable. Behind the third-row seat, the Pacifica offers 13.2 cubic feet of cargo volume, small for its competitive class. Fold both rows of seats, and maximum cargo volume measures 79.5 cubic feet. That's about 7 cubic feet less than the Pilot and Freestyle, while the Outlook beats the pack with a cavernous 117.0 cubic feet.
Without the third row, the five-seat Pacifica offers 92.7 cubic feet of cargo space.
2007 SafetySafety equipment on the Chrysler Pacifica was significantly upgraded for 2007. Pacifica has four sedan-like doors and the wide rear lift gate you'd expect on a sport-utility vehicle or minivan. The base model offers seating for five; other Pacificas increase capacity to six.
Power windows are one-touch down/up in front, and power front seats have Mercedes-style door controls. Base Pacificas sport 17-inch steel wheels, gray cladding and black door handles. Touring models upgrade to alloy wheels and body-colored door handles. At high speeds the Pacifica cruises quietly.
The 2007 Chrysler Pacifica line offers a range of models, from well-equipped to luxury-class and it's available with two or three rows of seating. The Pacifica has earned outstanding scores in government crash tests. The Chrysler Pacifica is an excellent all-purpose vehicle. The base model is practical, and with essential safety equipment, family features and all-wheel drive.
With the base model Pacifica, you get seating for five; there is a rear bench that seats three, but no third row. Touring and Limited models are equipped with second-row bucket seats and accommodate six passengers thanks to a split-folding third-row seat. A surprisingly accommodating entry height makes getting in and out of the Pacifica a breeze. Both second- and third-row chairs fold flat, affording the Pacifica a fair degree of versatility. However, cramped legroom means that the wagon's third row is best left for the wee ones. Cargo room is generous, opening up to 92.2 cubic feet in the base model and 79.5 in the Touring and Limited (due to the third-row seat).
Few automakers have as many trim packages and option bundles as Chrysler. Suffice to say that the base Pacifica comes fairly well-equipped with power front seats, windows and door locks; remote keyless entry; and a full array of safety equipment. At the opposite end, a decked-out Limited version boasts leather seats with heated first and second rows, dual-zone automatic climate control, a sunroof, a rearview backup camera and a navigation system.
As far as crossover virtues go, the Pacifica checks all the boxes.
Caranddriver.com praises Pacifica for merging some of the qualities of a sedan
and a minivan. "The Pacifica's sculpted lines give it a look that's more stylish
than that of your typical ho-hum kiddie hauler," says
Edmunds. It has a carlike
ride, high seating position and abundant practicality; all while avoiding the
boxy minivan look. As a crossover, Pacifica is definitely worth a look, or
two.
